University of Chicago’s Nadya Mason and Supratik Guha named to DOE Office of Science Advisory Committee

Unified advisory body will provide independent advice on complex scientific and technical challenges across the Office of Science

UChicago Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering Dean Nadya Mason and Prof. Supratik Guha have been named to the newly established Department of Energy Office of Science Advisory Committee (SCAC)

This unified advisory body will provide independent advice on complex scientific and technical challenges across the DOE's Office of Science. The Committee will adopt the core functions of the Office of Science’s six former discretionary advisory committees, providing a single, coordinated source of independent expert advice.

The 21 SCAC members represent universities, national labs, foundations, hospitals and companies across the nation.

“The establishment of SCAC underscores the Department's commitment to scientific integrity and the power of partnership,” said DOE Under Secretary for Science Darío Gil. “By bringing together leading minds from diverse institutions, we’re forging a collaborative framework that will not only enhance our scientific endeavors but also accelerate the translation of fundamental research into tangible benefits for the American people. This committee exemplifies how shared vision and collective expertise are essential for navigating the complex scientific landscape of today and tomorrow.”

That framework is a perfect fit for UChicago PME’s innovative interdisciplinary approach to research, said Mason, who also serves as Interim Vice President for Science, Innovation, and Partnerships for the University of Chicago.

“It is a privilege to serve on the Science Advisory Committee and contribute to the important work of the DOE Office of Science. The Office of Science has been an essential partner to the University of Chicago, Argonne National Lab, and US research as a whole, enabling groundbreaking research that drives innovation and benefits for society,” she said.

Guha, who is also a scientist at Argonne National Laboratory’s Physical Sciences and Engineering directorate, said, “This committee helps chart the course for the Office of Science in an important and impactful way. I am delighted that UChicago can help support this critical work.”
