A Welcome from Interim Dean Rowan

The challenges facing society today, from sustainable energy and quantum technologies to human health, are far too complex to be solved within the boundaries of a single discipline. They require scientists, engineers, and innovators willing to work across fields, challenge assumptions, and pursue bold ideas. That belief is at the heart of the UChicago Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering.

What makes UChicago PME distinctive is the ecosystem in which this work takes place. Our students and researchers engage with partners across the University of Chicago such as the Physical Sciences and Biological Sciences Divisions, the Institute for Climate and Sustainable Growth, the Polsky Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, and alongside leading institutions and organizations including Argonne National Laboratory, Fermilab, Biohub Chicago, and industry partners such as IBM and IonQ, among others. These partnerships create extraordinary opportunities to move ideas from discovery to application while preparing students to lead in academia, industry, government, and entrepreneurship.

Across UChicago PME, researchers are expanding the frontiers of quantum science and engineering, developing materials and technologies for a more sustainable future, and creating new bioengineering and immunoengineering approaches to improve human health. Their work advances fundamental knowledge while driving innovations that can improve lives and advance the public good.

As new tools such as artificial intelligence influence and accelerate scientific discovery, UChicago PME remains committed to providing students with a rigorous education that develops not only technical expertise, but also the creativity, critical thinking, and collaborative skills needed to thrive in a rapidly changing world.

What inspires me most about UChicago PME is our people. Faculty, students, staff, alumni, and partners come together around a shared commitment to discovery, education, and impact. Together, they are shaping the future of science and engineering in ways that deeply matter.

I invite you to explore the UChicago Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering and learn more about our community, their ideas, and the innovative science and engineering that is shaping the future.
