Do I need a BS in engineering or a strong quantitative background to apply to an engineering graduate program?
We do not require a BS in engineering for MEng applicants. While we do encourage all passionate and interested students to apply, this program was designed for students with an engineering or natural sciences background. If you have any questions about your preparation for the program, please contact the Program Director or the academic advisor for your track of interest.
What is the average GPA needed for admission to UChicago PME?
The application process is a holistic review of the applicant. GPA scores are assessed with all elements of the application. If you feel your GPA does not reflect your skills and abilities, you are welcome to include a personal explanatory statement.
Is work experience required for admission to UChicago PME?
No, but it is considered a relevant part of the applicant consideration.
Am I required to submit a GRE/GMAT score?
No. GRE and GMAT scores will not be accepted or reviewed.
Is there an English language proficiency requirement?

Should transcripts be sent directly to UChicago PME from an institution, or can they come by way of the applicant?
Unofficial transcripts can be uploaded via the application portal and are suitable for application review. All applicants who are offered admission will be required to submit official degree verifications and transcripts. Applicants will be provided complete instructions on the process at the appropriate time.
Do I need to submit transcripts from study abroad or from institutions where I did not pursue a degree?
No.
My transcripts are not in English: must they be translated?
Yes.
Is an interview required for UChicago PME?
No.
Can I submit more than two letters of recommendation?
Two letters of recommendation are all that are required.
When can I expect to receive an admission decision?
Decisions are expected to be released 6 – 8 weeks after the application deadline.
Program FAQs
Does this program qualify for the OPT STEM extension?
Yes, the Master of Engineering degree does qualify for the OPT STEM extension.
What areas of specialization/tracks are available?
There are five specialization “tracks” available for the Master of Engineering: Bio- and Immunoengineering, Quantum Engineering, Energy and Sustainability, Polymer Science and Engineering, and AI/Computation for Materials.
What degree will I receive on my diploma?
You will receive a Master of Engineering.
Where are classes held and how often do classes meet? Can I do the program part-time?
Master of Engineering courses are held on the main campus of the University of Chicago located in Hyde Park, approximately eight (8) miles south of downtown Chicago. Classes generally meet 2 or 3 times per week. While this program may be taken either part-time or full-time, we do not currently offer most classes on the weekend or in the evening. The ability to complete the program while working full-time will be dependent on the schedule of classes offered and the flexibility of your employer.
Does the program require a thesis?
The Master of Engineering is not a research-based program and does not have an option for students to complete a thesis as part of the program.
