Prof. Peter Neubauer, PhD, heads the Chair of Bioprocess Engineering at Technische Universität Berlin and is co-founder and director of the KIWI-biolab. A microbiologist by training, he has led bioprocess research at TU Berlin since 2008 after professorial work at the University of Oulu and earlier research positions in Halle, Stockholm and Greifswald. His team combines microbiology, genetics, engineering, process analytics and systems biology to understand and optimize complex biological production processes. Major themes include process monitoring and control, scale transfer, biocatalysis, high-throughput experimentation, and the robust production of pharmaceutical or bio-based molecules. Through KIWI-biolab, Neubauer advances automated experimentation in which robotic systems, analytical instruments, mathematical models and artificial intelligence work together to plan, run and interpret bioprocess studies. This approach aims to shorten development cycles, improve reproducibility, and reduce resources and cost. His work also reaches sustainable materials and circular bioeconomy applications, including microbial production of biodegradable polymers.
